"In April 2020 I divided my scrap collection into two equal piles and sent one batch of approximately 230 grams to Scientific Metals and another batch of approximately 230 grams to another refinery that my dental supply rep suggested. I was not expecting to draw any firm conclusions as I was aware there was a possibility than one pile may have had higher ratio of precious metals than the other one.

However, both companies had a very similar assay, notably both companies indicated that the batch sent to them had between 36-38% gold and 33-34% palladium. I was perplexed that both companies had very similar findings yet the settlement price from the company my dental supply rep recommended was $4082.34 while the settlement price from Scientific Metals was $5466.45 - about 33% higher from Scientific Metals. After a closer inspection, I learned that while both companies had a similar refining fee, the refinery my dental supply rep recommended had another charge they called "Accountability Charge" - which was about an additional 30% IN ADDITION to their refining fee. Scientific Metals did not have that accountability charge. Needless to say, Scientific Metals will be getting my future scrap metal business and I will be telling all my colleagues the same."

"Scientific Metals is the company that you can trust when recycling your scrap metals. Scientific Metals is 100% true to their word and advertisements of no hidden fees. I know this because I cut all the crowns crowns in half and put one half in Scientific Metals container and the other half in another company’s container ensuring the comparison was apples to apples and sent them off to the respective companies. Neither company knew that the other company had received the exact same batch in quantity and in metal composition. Each container had the exact same batch as the other and they were within 1g of total weight of each other.

After both companies processed the samples I received a quote from each company. Because the samples were identical in content, the break down of the various metals were very close. What was not close, was the amount offered. Scientific Metals was a little over 30% higher. Why? Because one company had an additional 30% approx. in charges in addition to the refining fee - Scientific Metals did not. Thank you Dave. "In March 2017, I sent in my about 700 grams to a refining company who was exhibiting at one of the trade shows and was informed about a week later that the bar’s value was $10,152.10. After their 10% refining fee and giving me a 5% promotion, I would be receiving a final settlement figure of $9644.50. At first, this seemed very reasonable and acceptable. But after a closer look at the report, something did not add up.Based on the metal percentages and the weight of the bar the company had on the report, the bar’s value should have added up to about $14,000.00. After speaking with the company, I was informed that in addition to the 10% refining fee there was another charge/deduction of about 30% that was factored into the formula that brought my final figure down to $9644.50. I declined this offer and the company send me back the melted bar along with a few metal samples taken from the bar.About 6 weeks later, I decided to send this bar to Scientific Metals for an analysis and spoke to Dave Weinberg who informed me that if the assays were confirmed, I would get about $12,500 with them because they did not have the extra 30% deduction.A few days later, I received an email from Mr. Weinberg informing me their analysis was complete and that the bar’s value was $14, 310.00 and that my final settlement figure would be 90% of that- which came to $ 12,879.59.Both companies analysis basically showed the same percentage of gold and palladium at 47% and 11% respectively. The only difference was that Scientific Metals did not have any charges or deductions in addition to the refining fee. The math was simple, I got back 90% of the value of the bar as opposed to 62% of the value of the bar with the first company."
